Iconic (adjective) : widely recognized and well established; widely known and acknowledged especially for distinctive excellence. Here's an excellent example of an iconic machine from the golden age of manual typewriters: a 1955 Smith-Corona Silent-Super, properly set up and ready for use right out of its original Holiday carrying case. I've cleaned, adjusted and lubricated this machine and have installed a fresh ink ribbon, wound onto period-correct metal spools. Every feature of this typewriter now functions as it was intended to in the year of its manufacture -- every key, every linkage, every control. Here's a short clip of the Silent-Super at work. 1955 Smith-Corona portable Silent-Super typewriter demo. The Smith-Corona typing touch is beloved among typewriter collectors and serious users -- it's quick and light, with a patented parallelogram design in the linkages which keeps every key flat through its stroke. The SCM marketing people called this feature comfort touch. The Silent-Super (prefix 5T) was the premium model in the line and is a favorite among collectors and writers today. The type size here is pica, 10 characters to the inch -- the larger of the two most common typewriter print sizes.

In the course of refurbishing this machine, all the bodywork was removed for access to the mechanical innards and a thorough cleaning (I've included a photo of the project in progress). The Holiday case (Smith-Corona's premium carrying case) has also been cleaned and is in excellent condition.Centered on the lid of the case is the logo and Latin seal of Notre Dame University; I can just imagine some earnest young student in 1955 receiving this typewriter as a gift on his way off to college. This wouldn't have been an inexpensive gift: The cost of a Silent-Super in 1955 was comparable to that of a good laptop computer today. Most important here, in my view, are the images depicting the impression this typewriter places on the page. If you seek a typewriter for use as well as for display, the quality of the specimen page should weigh heavily in your shopping decision. Collecting and restoring vintage typewriters has been a hobby of mine for some 40 years, and it's very seldom that I come across a mid-50s Silent-Super in such fine condition.
