Offered here, with a fresh bi-color ink ribbon and Smith-Corona's premium "Holiday" carrying case, is a carefully cleaned and adjusted, properly working example of a classic typewriter, the 1958 Sterling. Here's a short clip of the machine at work. 1958 Smith-Corona Sterling portable typewriter demo - YouTube.
In sapphire gray with the classic green bakelite keys, this is a sturdy machine in excellent condition, suitable for typing everything from grocery lists and quick notes to full-length manuscripts. Famous users of this model include Dr. Cummings, Carlos Fuentes, Tom Hanks and the playwright Arthur Miller. Every key and every control on this 1958 typewriter now works as it should.
A fresh ink ribbon has been wound onto vintage, period-correct steel spools. The "Holiday" case (Smith-Corona's premium carrying case) is clean and solid and continues to protect the typewriter well. This full-sized portable is ready for you to set out on your desk, load with paper and start writing straightaway. In "The Typewriter Revolution" -- the book I recommend to anyone who wants to learn more about manual typewriters -- Richard Polt includes the Smith-Corona 5 Series on his short list of good machines for writers. So does just about every other typewriter enthusiast and collector.
Smith-Corona introduced this iconic line of portables in time for the Christmas 1949 shopping season -- and if a Sterling was under the tree for you, someone must have thought you'd been good. The price of this machine, the middle of the model line, was equivalent in adjusted dollars to the price of a good laptop today. This typewriter came to me in need of cleaning and a few adjustments. Treatment with compressed air and solvents persuaded a half-century's worth of dust and grime to depart the premises. I adjusted the star wheel and master trip, scrubbed the segment and keyslugs with mineral spirits and brass brushes, loaded the new ink ribbon and aligned the capital and lowercase letters.Tabbing, backspace, ribbon reverse, caps lock, line advance: all check out properly. I found no evidence of abuse -- only honest use -- in my work with this typewriter. I've been collecting and tinkering with typewriters for some 40 years, and one of my favorite moments is still when that first round of repair work is done and it's time to load a sheet of paper and discover a machine's unique personality. This one did not disappoint. It makes a compelling statement about what wonderful writing machines these Smith-Coronas were in their mid-century heyday. This typewriter's body panels were removed for cleaning, and for access to the mechanical interior. Now, everything works as it did in 1958. The touch of a properly set-up Smith-Corona from this decade is light and crisp and quick.
Whether you're learning for the first time to type on a manual machine or an experienced touch-typist, this typewriter will keep up with you. I've photographed this typewriter from every side so you can judge for yourself its cosmetic condition. The absence of corrosion is notable. Exploring inside, you can appreciate the keyboard and linkages which fling the type onto the page, and watch the star-shaped escapement wheel clicking away, stepping the paper along as you type. You'll find the tabs inside the panel which tilts away at the back of the typewriter; these are actual tabs of metal, six of them, which clip into a slotted bar. This is why we call them tabs. What I'm trying to say, I suppose, is that the visibility of these mechanical parts is one of the joys of this series from Smith-Corona. I urge you to take your time examining the specimen typed sample. The type you see here is elite -- at 12 characters to the inch, it's the smaller of the two most common type sizes. In the case of this machine, it's not just the typewriter that's easy on the eyes; its printed product is excellent as well. I'm careful about packing typewriters so they reach their destinations safely.
