This Swiss-built Hermes Rocket dates, by the serial number engraved behind the carriage, to 1961. It has been carefully cleaned and adjusted, fitted with a fresh bicolor ribbon beneath its cool gull-wing covers, and it comes with the original snap-on lid that yields a total package weighing just less than 8 pounds. I've presented a sample page above that depicts the quality of this typewriter's printed impression -- and here is a short video showing the machine at work. Hermes Rocket 1961 typewriter demo - YouTube. The Rocket traces its lineage back to the Hermes Featherweight, a typewriter which received its United States patent in 1938.
Another name used for this machine over the years -- its production run spanned nearly half a century -- was the Hermes Baby. Cosmetically, this typewriter presents well. You can see scratches on the front, left-hand side of the bodywork where someone apparently struggled to place the lid over the machine. The lid is missing its carry handle, but is otherwise intact, opens and secures easily, and protects the typewriter properly. The machine, enclosed in its cover, measures just 11.5 inches wide, 11.5 inches from front to back, and 3 inches high.
The chrome is excellent, there's no corrosion, and all the body panels were removed for cleaning and adjustment of the working bits inside. It would be no trouble at all to drop this typewriter in your backpack or bag and carry to the park or coffee shop. Since the base is fully enclosed, it will work as well on a lap as it does on a desk or table.I've been collecting and repairing typewriters for some 40 years, and have lots of experience with everything from super-lightweights like this one to full-sized office machines weighing 30 pounds and more. This isn't the typewriter I'd choose to write a book manuscript, but it's great for letters and lists, and the durability of these little machines is legendary. Please message me if you've any questions about the use or care of this typewriter.
