The repairs involved nothing I haven't been through dozens of times, and included several visits to the shelves of parts machines that have accumulated during my four decades at this tinkering and collecting hobby. Now, every working function of this typewriter is correct -- every key and linkage, every control. This is a sturdy machine from the last years of Smith-Corona's famous 5 Series of typewriters. The Clipper, Sterling and Silent portables were introduced at the end of 1949 and were hugely popular through the ensuing decade. Famous users of this model include Dr.Cummings, Carlos Fuentes, actor Tom Hanks and playwright Arthur Miller. This full-sized portable has been thoroughly cleaned inside and out, and is ready for you to set out on your desk, load with paper and start writing straightaway. In "The Typewriter Revolution" -- the book I recommend to anyone who wants to learn more about manual typewriters -- Richard Polt includes the Smith-Corona 5 Series on his short list of recommended machines for writers. So does just about every other typewriter enthusiast and collector. The touch of a properly set-up Smith-Corona from this era is light and crisp and quick. Whether you're learning for the first time to use a manual machine or experienced as a touch-typist, this typewriter will keep up with you. I've photographed this typewriter from every side so you can judge for yourself its cosmetic condition. Exploring inside, you can see the keyboard and linkages which fling the type onto the page, and watch the star-shaped escapement wheel clicking away, stepping the paper along as you type. The tabs are revealed and can be set when you tip back the panel behind the paper roller; in one of the photos above, you can see them clipped into a slotted bar. Hence the name, and all that. What I'm trying to say, I suppose, is that the visibility of these mechanical parts is one of the pleasures of this series from Smith-Corona.
I urge you to take your time examining the specimen typed sample. The type you see here is pica -- at 10 characters to the inch, it's the larger of the two most common type sizes. I'm careful about packing typewriters so they reach their destinations safely. The item "1961 Smith-Corona Sterling typewriter withcase, ribbon.
