Rescuing typewriters is my hobby. Here's another completed project. This classic Smith-Corona portable from 1964, the Galaxie, is in excellent operating condition. It's clean, has been fitted with a new bicolor ink ribbon, and comes with a sturdy carrying case. I've been through this machine carefully, and it's ready now for its next owner to use and enjoy. This model, with the prefix 6T, was the successor to the iconic 5 Series of portables from Smith-Corona. Smith-Corona affixed the Galaxie name to its premium typewriters, inspired no doubt by the space race with the Soviet Union, from 1960 well into the late 1970s. You could pack this Galaxie in the trunk of your vintage Ford Galaxie 500 and really get into the Sputnik spirit. I know typewriters, having enjoyed collecting and fixing them for nearly 40 years.

This is a mechanically sound example of one of my favorite machines from Smith-Corona in terms of features, form factor -- just the overall typing experience. The Galaxie was Smith-Corona's premium portable machine, and it remains a righteous writer's tool today. This typewriter is in better-than-decent cosmetic condition -- I'll let you study these photos and judge for yourself. The sliding ribbon cover has been repainted. The chrome and plastic bits are in excellent shape, and as you can see from the image of the underside (for which the full baseplate was removed), there's no corrosion in the works.

This machine is a joy to type on (quick and responsive action, as I hope the video demonstrates), and I invite you to examine the specimen page. The type pitch you see here is elite, 12 characters to the inch -- the smaller of the two common typewriter text sizes.

Paper roller is in fine shape. As a group, the Galaxies are rugged and user-friendly typewriters. Alan Seaver, whose website on typewriters is an authoritative resource, writes: Galaxies from this era are splendid machines to type on.
