This classic Smith-Corona portable, the Galaxie, is in excellent operating condition. It's clean, has a new ink ribbon, and comes in a solid Smith-Corona "Trimline" carrying case. I've been through this machine carefully, checking and adjusting each function, and it's ready now for its next owner to use and enjoy. Every mechanical feature works as it should -- every key and every control. The typing action is delightfully quick and responsive. Here's a short clip of the typewriter at work. 1965 Smith-Corona Galaxie typewriter demo - YouTube. This machine, with the 6T prefix, has a serial number dating it to either 1965 or late 1964. This was the first iteration of the Galaxie, a line that would carry Smith-Corona to the end of the era of manual typewriters. It was Smith-Corona's premium machine, successor to the iconic 5 Series of portables that were such a success in the 1950s. The most notable feature of the Galaxie's new, more angular design, was the ribbon cover that slides toward you instead of lifting like the hood of an automobile. I know typewriters, having enjoyed collecting and fixing them for some 40 years. This is a mechanically sound example of one of my favorite machines from Smith-Corona in terms of features, ease of use -- just the overall typing experience. The Galaxie was Smith-Corona's most expensive portable machine, and it remains a righteous writer's tool today. Inside, there's no corrosion in the works.

The full metal baseplate was removed for two photos so you can see the mechanical parts. If you look closely you can see that the carriage release levers on both sides of the machine have been reinforced with epoxy; many of the Galaxies I refurbish get this treatment, because these plastic bits begin to crack and break after 40 or 50 years. I also did a repair to the carrying case, replacing the metal bracket at the back which holds the typewriter secure inside. This machine is a joy to type on (quick and responsive action, as I hope the video demonstrates), and I invite you to examine the specimen typed page closely.

The type pitch you see here is elite, 12 characters to the inch -- the smaller of the two common typewriter text sizes. The platen (paper roller) is in fine shape. As a group (with variations continuing through the 1970s), the Galaxies are rugged and user-friendly typewriters. Alan Seaver, whose website on typewriters is an authoritative resource, is a big fan: "Galaxies from this era, " he writes, are splendid machines to type on. I understand that careful packing is vital, and will make every effort to see that this typewriter reaches you in fine working trim. The item "1965 Smith-Corona Galaxie typewriter withcase, ribbon.
