Here's a clean and beautifully functioning example of one of my favorite portable typewriters: a Smith-Corona 5AX Sterling, dating to 1965. Fully serviced and with a new bicolor ink ribbon wound onto period-correct steel spools, this typewriter is ready for immediate use right out of its "Trimline" carrying case.

This classic machine is one of Smith-Corona's most user-friendly designs. Everything works: every key, every control, right down to an end-of-line warning bell that rings so brightly you can hear it from the next room. Here's a clip of the typewriter in operation.

1965 Smith-Corona Sterling typewriter demo. Collecting and repairing typewriters has been a hobby for some 40 years, and even though this is the brand I know best, still I learned new things in the course of my work with this machine. My apologies for the nerdy interlude ahead.

This model, made from 1963 to 1966, is sometimes called the chop-front portable because the front panel was modified to accept an inset aluminum piece that bore the Sterling logo. This particular machine came to me with that nameplate missing, which happens fairly often since it was only held on with rubber cement. I filled in the space with a strip of semi-gloss black plastic, which you could easily remove if you ever come across an original nameplate. Mechanically, this typewriter is a full-sized portable with all the working features (and solid build quality) of the premium Silent-Super that preceded it, and of the restyled Galaxie models that followed. This Sterling has a full keyboard including the number 1 and exclamation point; it has such niceties as the pop-up paper holder, touch control, the removable platen, and tabs that can be set and cleared from the keyboard.

And admittedly this is a small detail, but the 5AX typewriters were the last from Smith-Corona to feature steel release levers at the ends of the carriage. SCM's 6-Series models had plastic levers, which often begin to fail after 30 or 40 years. The 5AX Sterling is a machine highly regarded among collectors and users of portable typewriters. Its user interface is superb, and its mechanics are really without weak points. Archivist of the online Typewriter Database, author and guru on all things typewriterish -- describes this typewriter as one which might be the best typewriter design ever in terms of being rich in features and simple to use.

And by the way, I owe Mr. Munk a debt of thanks for his wonderful resource, The Smith-Corona Typewriter Repair Shop Manual. Without the diagram of the tabulator mechanism on page 72, I might never have gotten this machine working just right.

In the course of my repair work all the body panels were removed (see photo of naked machine above), which provided access not only for needed adjustments but also for a thorough cleaning of the typewriter, inside and out. I had picked up this typewriter thinking it was a candidate for repainting, but the original blue finish cleaned up so beautifully that I have left the paint stock. The chrome on this typewriter is also excellent; there's no corrosion to speak of anywhere on the machine. I always include photos of a specimen page, because if you're planning to use a typewriter you deserve the opportunity to examine its actual output. The typing touch of this Sterling is crisp and responsive, and the printed page presents well.

Line spacing can be set at single, double or triple. The type pitch is elite, 12 characters to the inch -- the smaller of the two most common type sizes. I hope you'll take an extra two minutes to save and reuse the vintage spools when -- several hundred pages of typing from now -- it comes time to replace the ribbon.
