1969 Olympia SM9 Deluxe Portable Typewriter withcase, new ribbon works correctly

  
If you had to pick just one typewriter to use for the rest of your life, you wouldn't go wrong with an Olympia SM9. " -- So writes author Richard Polt in the chapter on selecting a machine from his 2015 book, "The Typewriter Revolution. As a collector-of and tinkerer-with typewriters for the past 40 years, I cringe at the thought of having to pick just one, but I agree entirely with Mr. Here's a short clip demonstrating Mr. Polt's favorite machine (and mine) at work. It's a marvelous tool, built without compromise and a delight under the typist's fingers. The SM9 had a long run, in continuous manufacture deep into the 1970s. What we have here is an excellent example of the model from 1969, one of the last to be built with the original script logo on the front panel. Olympia introduced a circular emblem logo later that year; in 1969 the company also introduced the charcoal-gray keys you see here, and the softer black carrying case that protects this typewriter.

I've gone through this machine with care, cleaning, adjusting, checking everything. Now every operating feature of the typewriter -- every key and every control -- is working like new. Under the hood, as you can see, I've wrapped a fresh ink ribbon onto period-correct steel spools.

This typewriter takes a standard "universal" ribbon, but you won't have to worry about that for several hundred pages. The typeface you see in the specimen page is called Modern Pica 67; the quickest way to identify this face is by the lowercase letter g, with its open descender instead of the more common loop. This is one of my favorite Olympia fonts, clean and easy on the eyes, distinctive without loudly calling attention to itself.

The great type designer Adrian Frutiger famously said, The whole point with type is for you not to be aware it is there. If you remember the shape of a spoon with which you just ate some soup, then the spoon had a poor shape.
