This typewriter dates to late 1973, early into the production run of the Galaxie Twelve, Smith-Corona's premium portable machine from 1972 into 1980. Alan Seaver, whose website on typewriters is an authoritative resource, is an admirer of this model, writing: Galaxies of this era are splendid machines to type on. As a collector-of/tinkerer-with typewriters for some 40 years, I entirely agree.

This stout and cosmetically excellent example of the Galaxie Twelve has been gone through carefully -- adjusted, cleaned, sparingly lubricated, and repaired where needed. It has a fresh ribbon wound onto period-correct metal spools, and it comes housed in a solid carrying case. Here's a clip of the machine at work. Smith-Corona Galaxie Twelve, 1973 -- demo - YouTube.

The Galaxie Twelve was designed as a full-sized portable for home use. It's not one of those lightweights you'd want to carry to the local coffee shop. Once I pack this thing up with lots of padding, the box will weigh in the neighborhood of 25 pounds.

The photos tell the story of this machine's cosmetics. The color rendition seems to be most accurate in the indoor images -- it's a bit muted in the outdoor photos. As for the working condition of the typewriter, I have no flaws to report. The machine performs reliably and correctly, right down to the bright end-of-line bell.

It has the eponymous twelve-inch carriage, which allows you to load paper in either portrait or landscape orientation. It has a platen that's in excellent condition, and produces type in the size called pica, 10 characters to the inch. Lines can be adjusted for single, double or triple-spacing.

The keyboard experience for the typist is snappy and quick. The Galaxie features a full 44-key keyboard, including the number 1 and the exclamation point. I urge you to spend some time examining the image of the typed specimen page. This machine's impression on the paper shows none of the irregular "dancing" type that suggests a typewriter has seen heavy use.

The precise and even copy produced by this machine suggests an easy life over the years. This is about as good as copy gets from a typewriter made in 1973. The Galaxie Twelves were produced during what turned out to be the last decade for serious, high-quality manual typewriters. Electric typewriters, and then the personal computer, together would render these manual machines extinct. But by the 1970s the engineers at Smith-Corona had solved all the essential problems and were left to focus on minor enhancements that the salespeople might be able to tout.
