This is an antique sterling silver cigarette case that is engraved to J. It was made in Birmingham England in 1915. The inside inscription says 7th Durham Light Infantry Sunderland J.
Researching into this soldier, I found J. Wilson ended up fighting in the 10th Battalion and died on September 16, 1916 at the battle of Somme in France. Before world war 1, the durham light infantry had 9 total battalions. That number increased to 42 battalions during the war.
The q stands for the year it was made in Birmingham, 1915. The lion represents that it is made of sterling silver. JCLtd is the silver maker, John Charles Lowe. The item measures about 3.5 x 3.25.
There is minor cosmetic wear but there are no dents or dings. Very good condition for its age. The case is engraved in a floral pattern.
