Offered here is a sturdy little typewriter built for the Royal typewriter company sometime around 1970 by. Clean inside and out, this machine is in perfect operating condition.

The typewriter's blue metal shell was removed for access to the works inside, and everything got a careful cleaning before the body went back on. This typewriter features a full keyboard including the numeral 1 and exclamation point; it has a keyboard touch control, and it adjusts for single line spacing, 1.5 lines or 2 lines.

The type size is elite -- 12 characters to the inch, the smaller of the most common type sizes. The action is quick and responsive. This typewriter comes with a fresh ink ribbon and its original snap-on cover.

Every key and every control on this 50-year-old machine is now working properly, right down to the cheery end-of-line warning bell. Here's a short clip showing the typewriter in action. Royal Companion (Silver-Seiko) ultraportable typewriter demo.

For a detailed 23-minute review, navigate to youtube and look for the Royal Mercury video posted by the wonderful family team of enthusiasts at Typewriter Minutes. They call this model the "Mister Cellophane" of typewriters, because it's a sleeper -- a good machine that rarely gets the billing it deserves. I have worked on many Mercury typewriters, and this Companion model is identical except for the name and the blue paint finish.

I've been collecting and repairing typewriters for 40 years, and these lightweights built by Silver-Seiko are among my favorite ultraportables. In the absence of more precise information from the online typewriter serial number database, we can safely date this metal-bodied machine to between 1965 and 1971. This typewriter's integral lid snaps securely over the top; the base is fully enclosed, and the whole business with its fresh ribbon weighs just over 10 pounds, 5 ounces. My collection of more than 50 typewriters almost always includes ultraportables from this generation of Japanese machines -- because they tell a story about typewriter history, and they're delightful in use. I'd rank the Companion and Mercury right alongside the Brother machines in terms of user-friendly operation, quality of printing and sturdy (albeit simple) construction.

Lightweight typewriterss like this weren't designed for all-day use in an office setting. But unlike its 40-pound bigger siblings, the Companion can easily be snapped into its case and stored away, carried to the coffee shop or packed along on your next cross-country outing. The enclosed baseplate lets you rest the typewriter on your lap if a desk isn't close by.

And just look at the impression this little machine makes on the printed page. That should be the real measure of a typewriter if you're looking for a writing tool and not just a display piece.

This machine's output is clean and crisp and consistent, and it easily keeps up with me at 60 words per minute. Because it's simple, lightweight and so nearly bulletproof, this would be an excellent first typewriter for a younger writer. If it's your first typewriter -- and I warn you, collecting these wonderful machines can be habit-forming -- the Companion will likely still be on your short list of favorites after you've accumulated a dozen or two.
