Offered here is a lightweight typewriter built by Silver Seiko in Japan, circa 1970, for the Royal typewriter company. It's immaculately clean and in perfect operating condition.

The bodywork was removed for access to the mechanics inside, and everything got a careful cleaning before the panels went back on. This machine features a full keyboard with the numeral 1 and exclamation point; it has a keyboard touch control, and it adjusts for single line spacing, 1.5 lines or 2 lines. The type size is elite -- 12 characters to the inch, the smaller of the most common type sizes. The action is quick and responsive. This typewriter comes complete with a fresh ink ribbon and a high-resolution scanned copy of the original user manual. Every key and every control on this 50-year-old machine is now working properly. Here's a short clip of the typewriter in action. Royal Mercury circa 1970 typewriter demo - YouTube. I've been collecting and repairing typewriters for 40 years, and these lightweights built by Silver Seiko are among my favorite ultraportables. This typewriter dates to the era when two Japanese companies, Brother and Silver Seiko, upended the typewriter industry in much the same way as Honda and Toyota were shaking up the auto business.

These Japanese manufacturers had to overcome the American consumer's prejudice of the day that Japanese goods were cheap and shoddy. In fact their typewriters, like their automobiles, were well-designed and reliable even as they competed in a price niche that undercut their American competitors. Among ultraportables, I prefer machines that feature an integral lid as this one does. Too often with vintage lightweights, zippered cases give out after 40 or 50 years while the typewriters are still going strong.

The lid snaps tightly over this typewriter, the base is fully enclosed, and the whole business with ribbon installed weighs just over 10 pounds. In the photo of the underside you'll see that I have affixed four new rubber feet, which improve the machine's grip on your desk or table. I have somewhere north of 50 typewriters, and my collection almost always includes ultraportables from this generation of Japanese machines -- because they tell a story about typewriter history, and they're delightful in use. My preference runs to the big, honking office machines of the 1950s and 60s -- I grew up with them, and they weren't built big just to use up more metal. But I do appreciate where lightweights like this fit into the equation; you can so easily pop this machine in a backpack and take it to the coffee shop or on your next cross-country outing. And the enclosed base lets you place the typewriter on your lap if a desk isn't close by. And just look at the impression this little machine makes on the printed page. That's the real test of a typewriter if you're looking for a writing tool and not just a display piece -- and this machine's output is clean and consistent. I'm a 60-wpm touch typist and this typewriter keeps up with me easily. Because it's simple and nearly unbreakable, this would be a good first typewriter for a younger writer.

The touch is light enough that a preteen should be able to use it without frustration. In fact, both Royal and Brother marketed these lightweights specifically as machines for children in those early years when they were first breaking into the American market.
