Here's one of my favorite portable typewriter models from Smith-Corona: a 1965 Sterling from the 5AX series, carefully cleaned and serviced, with a solid "Trimline" carrying case, with a fresh ink ribbon wound onto steel spools, with its original user manual -- ready for immediate use. Cosmetically, this is a good example of one of Smith-Corona's best designs.Mechanically, it's completely functional. Everything works: every key, every control. Here's a clip of the machine at work. Smith-Corona 1965 Sterling typewriter demo - YouTube. Collecting and repairing typewriters has been a hobby of mine for some 40 years, and Smith-Corona is the brand I know best.
Mechanically, this machine has all the working features (and build quality) of the premium Silent-Super before it, and of the premium Galaxie model that followed. This Sterling has a full keyboard including the number 1 and exclamation point; it has the pop-up paper holder, touch control, the removable platen, and tabs that can be set and cleared from the keyboard. And I realize this is a small thing, but I'm speaking here from experience rescuing dozens of vintage typewriters: The 5AX series was the last from Smith-Corona to feature steel release levers at each end of the carriage. The Sterlings and Galaxies introduced plastic levers, which can be counted upon to need replacement or epoxying after 30 or 40 years. The 5AX Sterlings are highly regarded among collectors and users of portable typewriters.
Archivist of the online Typewriter Database, author and guru on all things typewriter -- describes the 5AX as a machine which really bring[s] the best features of the Galaxie to the smaller and more attractive Super-5 body, and might be the best typewriter design ever in terms of being rich in features and simple to use. The most visible cosmetic imperfections are some chips in the paint at the corners of the bodywork, from the typewriter being transferred in and out of its carrying case. Please understand that if your interest is in purchasing (or gifting) a machine that is ready for typing rather than tinkering, your best bet is to seek out typewriters that have been serviced and tested, as this one has. A specimen page is the closest thing I can offer you to a test-drive, and I urge you to examine these sample images, presented both in the machine and in a digital scan. The typing touch of this machine is crisp and responsive.
Line spacing can be set at single, double or triple. The type pitch is elite, 12 characters to the inch -- the smaller of the two most common type sizes.
