You can find vintage Tower typewriters that were built for Sears by Underwood, Remington, and Smith-Corona going back as far as 1949. Here's a look at this Tower Quiet-Tabulator at work, cruising comfortably at 60 words per minute. When I restore a typewriter -- a hobby for the past 40 years -- sometimes I find the paint finish so rough that repainting is the only option. In this case the typewriter's bodywork cleaned up pretty well. There are certainly marks from use, and some bits of discoloration (see especially the second image), but leaving this machine in original finish was the right decision.

I particularly like the way the Tower logo matches the classic green bakelite keys. The chrome is good; corrosion is not an issue with this typewriter, and mechanically it's in excellent shape: every key, every control, works now as it should. The case is solid, closes securely and protects the typewriter well.

One of the four metal feet at the back of the case (or the bottom when it's standing up, say, in your closet) is missing; I've replaced it with an adhesive-backed rubber bumper. Most important among these images are those presenting the specimen typed page: this is the machine's actual product, which you should want to see if you're serious about using a typewriter rather than merely displaying it on a shelf. The type size produced by this machine is pica pitch -- 10 characters to the inch, the larger of the two most common type sizes from this era. The printed text is clear and crisp and even, a sign that this typewriter hasn't been abused over its life of more than six decades. The paper roller (platen) looks to be original to this machine, which means it has lost much of its resiliency over the years.

Working with typewriters of this vintage, I always advise using a second "backing" sheet behind your typed page, to add some cushioning. If you end up falling in love with this machine and want to have the roller refinished, I recommend a company called J. Short (you can find them online) -- and one nice feature of this typewriter is the easy way the roller removes without need for any tools.
